AFAS is a non-political,
non-profit organisation.
Its office in the ACT is formally with the Public
Officer; the members list is held by the Hon. Sec.
AFAS aims to:
• foster
contacts between French and Australian scientists, engineers and other
professional and technical specialists
• maintain
ties of friendship between its members and the two countries
• promote
scientific, educational, cultural and social activities
• collaborate
with the Alliance Française de Canberra <www.afcanberra.com.au/>.

Sherry McArdle-English and her husband Gavan
were urban dwellers who had never imagined being pioneers in the Canberra
agricultural industry.
Due to a collision of unexpected events, they are now driving the real
possibility of developing a new and exciting truffle industry in the
Territory.

Fostering collaboration with France
for ACT post
graduate research students
AFAS ACT Science
& Technology Fellowships for 2011
AFAS ACT and the Embassy of France in Australia are
offering post graduate science and technology research students, residing or
studying in the ACT, a unique opportunity to undertake training or a
collaborative study with a French University or research body in 2011. The
grant of $3,000 is a contribution to return airfares to France and living costs
for the duration of the stay.

Our Annual General Meeting 2009
was held on 10 December 2009 on the ANU campus,
RSPhysSE
Professor John Love, President, reported on the events of
last year, and the Treasurer Peter Judge circulated an income and expenditure
report.
The committee for 2009–10 will comprise many of the same
members as last year, namely: Professor John Love, Professor Rod Boswell, Peter
Judge, Professor Joe Gani, Dr Anne Campbell, Dr Irina Borissova, Dr Rowena Ball
and Dr Doug McKenzie. Dr Kaddour Raissi, Science and Technology Attaché, French
Embassy, and Eric Noitakis, Commercial Counsellor, French Trade Commission, are
ex officio members of the committee. New members include: Dr Katherine
Daniell, Jean-Francois Desvignes-Hicks and Olivier Ngo.
In accordance with the Constitution, the committee elected
from among its members the holders of the executive positions:
President Professor Rod Boswell FAA, Vice-president
Professor John Love, Secretary Dr Anne Campbell, Treasurer Dr Irina Borissova.
